About the role

The Programme Specialist (Sciences) will support the implementation of UNESCO’s science agenda across the Pacific region. Working under the Assistant Director‑General for Sciences and the Director of the UNESCO Office for the Pacific States, the incumbent will collaborate with headquarters, regional bureaus and national commissions to advance science, technology and innovation programmes.

Key responsibilities

  • Strengthen collaborative relationships with National Commissions and Member States to promote science for sustainable development in Small Island Developing States.
  • Conceptualise, design, plan, develop, coordinate, implement and monitor work plans aligned with the Sciences Sector Strategies.
  • Develop and implement programme activities that support research, needs identification and capacity building for Pacific Member States.
  • Provide expert technical assistance, advice and support to governments on UNESCO science initiatives and Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission projects.
  • Coordinate international and national capacity‑building activities, including education and training in basic and engineering sciences.
  • Contribute to resource mobilisation and ensure UNESCO programmes are reflected in the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework.

Required profile

  • Proven ability to build and maintain partnerships with national and regional stakeholders.
  • Experience in designing, planning and monitoring science‑related programmes and projects.
  • Strong knowledge of UNESCO’s science, technology and innovation policies and the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.
  • Capacity to provide technical assistance and advisory support to governments and institutions.
